The Repetitive Strain Injury

Repetitive strain injury, also known as RSI, is a debilitating condition that happens due to overuse of hands doing repetitive tasks. It is defined as a cumulative trauma disorder. The result of this condition is damage to muscles, tendons and nerves of arms, shoulder and neck that causes severe pain, weakness, numbness and loss of motor function. You may be at risk of developing repetitive strain injury if you have poor posture, use a computer at least four hours a day, don’t exercise regularly, and have serious medical conditions like diabetes, arthritis, and have an unhealthy and stressful lifestyle.

Repetitive strain injury is not a specific medical condition, but rather a group of disorders. Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is one of the particular forms of RSI. There is a study that frequent computer use or repetitive movements of hands are more likely increase the risk CTS. It is a type of compression neuropathy caused by compression of the median nerve that is due to the pressure from the carpal ligament. But this is a different case to other forms of RSI.

There are many other types of repetitive strain injury and those are:

- Bursitis, which is the inflammation of bursa and it is also known as “beat” condition.
- Cubital tunnel syndrome is caused when the ulnar nerve is compressed on the elbow’s edge.
- DeQuervain’s syndrome is also known as “mother’s wrist” and “washerwoman’s sprain” and it causes tender and swollen thumb.
- Dupuytren’s contracture is a condition wherein the patients are unable to fully open their hand and the affected part is the ring and little finger.
- Dystonia or writer’s cramp is an involuntary hand tremors and muscle spasms.
- Epicondylitis are also referred to as ”Golfer’s elbow” and “Tennis Elbow” and it is a common repetitive injury affecting the elbow joint.
- Gamekeeper’s thumb is very common among skiers and gamekeepers and it causes inflammation and pain on the thumb.
- Ganglion cysts will commonly occur on the wrist and fingers.
- Raynaud’s disease is a condition wherein the blood supplies on extremities are impaired.
- Tendinitis is the over use of tendons that will cause swelling and tearing of the tendons and tissues.
- Tenosynovitis is the inflammation of the synovial sheath that covers the tendons and lastly is the thoracic outlet syndrome, which is the compression of nerves and blood vessels in the thoracic outlet that is located between the lower neck and armpit.

What you need to do if you have repetitive strain injury

If you are experiencing symptoms of any one of these repetitive strain injury, you should prepare yourself to some changes in your lifestyle especially in your work. This does not mean that you should stop what you are doing, but rather you will have to modify your workplace or planning rest periods and also making yourself comfortable so that the pain and discomforts that you are experiencing because of the injury will be diminished. Application of splint or brace will also help in avoiding further strains.

If you still experiencing the symptoms of repetitive strain injury and in fact it continues to get worse after two days of stopping work or doing the things that gave you that strain in the first place, you should seek your doctor’s help immediately. The doctors usually recommend a good physical therapist for you and prescribe medications like pain killers such as ibuprofen and aspirin. The physical therapist will be able to diagnose your real problem and formulate a treatment plan. The plan usually focuses on correcting your posture, improving the function of the affected part and not relieving your pain, although at some time it will be relieved.

Acupuncture and acupressure could also help you to relieve the pain of repetitive strain injury and stimulate good blood circulation on the affected region. The number of sessions for this depends on how severe your condition is. Another one is hot/cold water bath and this could really help in alleviating the pain, numbness, tingling sensation and any kind of discomfort.

Surgery will be the last option for repetitive strain injury. It is only done when after 6 months of therapy or doing other carpal tunnel remedies, your condition worsens. You will not be able to regain your normal hand strength or function after the surgery. You still have to deal with the after effects of surgery and undergo certain management plan to be able to be fully recovered.

There are things that you need to remember to be able to avoid another incidence of repetitive strain injury. You should rest as much as possible from all of the activity that you do that causes your injury. Also a good amount of rest can also help you heal. Yoga, Pilates and aerobic are examples of stretching and strengthening exercises that do not aggravate the injury and in fact will help with the healing process. Be knowledgeable about good posture on while you are working, in everything that you do and most especially when typing because this will help minimize the strains in your muscles, ligaments and tendons. Being patient, persistent and consistent with all of this could make your life strain and injury free and you will be able to experience and enjoy a healthy body and quality life.

You may be experiencing carpal tunnel symptoms right now but are not aware what they indicate. Yes, there are symptoms experienced by the person that can strongly indicate that they have carpal tunnel syndrome.

Carpal tunnel syndrome or also known as CTS is a type of neuropathy striking the median nerve of the hand. This condition if left untreated can extend to more debilitating conditions.

Carpal tunnel symptoms are elicited or reproduced by improper wrist positions such as extreme wrist flexion or extension. The CTS indicants are also evoked with poor ergonomics that strain the wrist and the muscles it bears. There are also some medical conditions that can lead to compression of the median nerve, these conditions primarily affect the water retention capacity of the person’s body.

Median nerve is the involved nerve in carpal tunnel syndrome. This nerve provides the sensation on the thumb, index, middle and radial half of the ring fingers. It also supplies the motor function on some muscles of the hand particularly the thumb muscles.

The carpal tunnel symptoms start with feeling of tingling sensation on your hand that eventually develop to unbearable sharp shooting pain. Have you experienced this hand tingling sensation during the night? The kind of pain felt by the person with carpal tunnel syndrome awakens them from sleep.

An irritated nerve can cause intense pain, especially felt during the night. Pain, tingling sensations and numbness are three of the most common symptoms of this disorder. It is a nocturnal pain because the intensity of pain felt by the person awakens the individual. The doctor must be seen so as not to worsen the conditions.

Poor ergonomics is one the most frequent causes of carpal tunnel syndrome. Our hands and wrist, if used frequently at work must be positioned in neutral and relaxed positions. If your work requires you to do a lot of typing, wrist flexion and straining of finger flexors occurrence of CTS is possible.

Mechanical workers who use screwdrivers at work require a lot of gripping to complete tasks. These hand functions also contribute to the development of carpal tunnel syndrome. Pushing down a ratchet can also contribute to the development of the syndrome.

Repetitive hand motion is also one of the causes of carpal tunnel syndrome. Hairdressers who do different hairstyles and haircuts each day use a lot of wrist motions. Painters who use spray guns to complete their work of arts and janitors who sweep and do a lot of scrubbing in a day do also experience numbness and tingling sensations in the hands.

Did you know that homemakers are prone to this syndrome too? Yes, since a homemaker is an occupation, our mothers do experience some tingling and pain sensations in their hands once in a while. This is true especially to those who do some knitting activities.

If you think that only wrist motions can cause carpal tunnel syndrome, then think again. Remember that finger flexors are also contributors in compressing the median nerve, and this can happen if your job requires you to do fine finger and hand functions. If you work as a locksmith who makes and repairs keys then you must be aware of the CTS symptoms. Electronics workers who assemble small parts of the different electronic gadgets, they have to use their fingers to do fine microelectronics parts.

Strong gripping and different mechanical stress put on palms also are the causes of carpal tunnel syndrome. Gardeners need to have a good grip on their garden hand weeder when weeding and removing small plant roots in gardening. Butcher and poultry processing workers also need strong grips when handling their instruments in cutting and de-boning the meat products. These activities put mechanical stresses on the palms.

These are just few of the jobs that cause the symptoms, you can always check online if your occupation is one of the causes of carpal tunnel syndrome. Knowing the risk your job can bring you is the wiser thing to do.

Carpal Tunnel In Pregnancy

The carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) in pregnancy is a relatively common neurogenic disorder experienced by pregnant women. The symptoms of carpal tunnel in pregnancy are often experienced on the last three months of pregnancy.

Carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by the compressed median nerve within the carpal tunnel. When this nerve is compressed you may feel pain, numbness, and tingling sensations in your hand and wrist.

The flexor tendons of the hands and the median nerve pass through the carpal tunnel. This inflexible tunnel is generally a narrow tunnel roofed by the transverse ligament called flexor retinaculum and floored by the carpal (wrist) bones.

You may feel tingling and pain sensations in your hand which are more severe at night. The symptoms in your carpal tunnel in pregnancy may be exacerbated by the physical changes experienced by the woman on the later months of pregnancy. Bear in mind that if you only experienced the symptoms during pregnancy then the CTS may be caused only by pregnancy and may simply go away after you give birth.

20% – 50% of pregnant women experience numbness and pins & needles in their hands during pregnancy. When you are pregnant every part of your body seems to swell. This is because you retain a lot of fluid and it can also accumulate in your wrist joints. These accumulated fluid increases the pressure within the carpal tunnel and this pressure may be enough to elicit the different symptoms.

If you’ve got carpal tunnel syndrome you may experience some swelling, weakness and pins and needles sensation in your hand. Once any of these symptoms is experienced, you must see your care provider for the recommended management of this problem.

A joint, as such the wrist joint, do have a covering called the synovium. Synovium contain synovial fluid that lubricates the joint. Any excess fluid in a pregnant woman will go to different parts of the body including the synovium of the wrist joint. Since edema of the joint is one of the symptoms in the carpal tunnel in pregnancy , this means the swelling can cause compression of the nerve.

The alternative pain managements also include massage and acupuncture. These are doctors’ advice or recommendations. These alternative managements can be as effective as taking in pain medications which can be systematically harmful to the unborn baby.

All excess fluid, which is the culprit in causing the symptoms in the carpal tunnel in pregnancy, will go away after the delivery of your baby. In addition, symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome will also go away because there will be lessened pressure to the inflexible, narrow carpal tunnel. The nerve remains inflamed for a few weeks after your body fluid level returns to the state it was before pregnancy. You may still feel some pain and numbness in your hand for about three months after giving birth but in decreasing intensities. Some women may still experience the symptoms for a year.

If you continue to experience the CTS symptoms and exacerbation of these are noted then you must see you primary care physician to know of other options that you may take to be totally relieved from carpal tunnel syndrome.

The Importance of Carpal Tunnel Exercises

The disease condition that affects your hand and fingers brought about by the compression of the median nerve in your wrist is called Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) and the way to combat this is to do the right carpal tunnel exercises.

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a neurogenic disorder of the hand with neuropathy of the median nerve. If left untreated, this condition can progress into a more serious problem that will require you to undergo a hand surgery or into a more debilitating condition by atrophying your thumb muscles. This is why knowing how to treat this problem using the correct carpal tunnel exercises is very important.

Initially, when you start noticing the numbness and tingling sensation in your hand and your fingers the advice would be for you to rest your hand. If your job requires you to use your hand and wrist in a prolonged period, you must rest your hand in frequent intervals. A temporary relief may be achieved by flicking your hands; this relieves and decreases the compression onto the affected nerve.

Sometimes the use of hand and wrist splint is advised by your physician to help lessen the stress and pain in your wrist. This splint is also advised to be used at night especially because most people usually sleep with their wrist bent. Some also sleep with their heads on the wrist. If you are suffering from CTS, it will cause you to wake up in the middle of the night because of the numbness and pain resulting from sleeping with your wrist in a flexed position causing compression on the nerve.

Performing the carpal tunnel exercises is advised when you start noticing symptoms because if left untreated the progression of the disease will happen. You will not only feel numbness, tingling sensation and pain but you will also start to lose your grip strength. You will find experience that it is harder to grab objects and you will notice that you start dropping things that you grab involuntarily.

In worst cases you can experience muscle wasting in the area. This is because the motor function of the nerve on the muscles of the thumb is being weakened by the compression. The last resort for this condition is a surgical intervention, an open hand surgery.

When Carpal Tunnel Exercises Were Not Done

Going through surgery will not only be painful but can also be very expensive for you. This 20 to 30 minute out-patient procedure can cause you around $2,000 to $5,000. There are two popular surgical procedures used to treat carpal tunnel syndrome. The first one is called an open release surgery which involves a surgical incision that is about 1 ½ – 2 inches done on the palm side of the hand and the incision is made from the hand creases extending to the wrist area. The second is called the endoscopic tunnel release surgery also known as a ‘keyhole’ incision.

In this procedure a small incision (keyhole) is made by the physician large enough for the endoscope (a thin tube surgical device) to go through so that the internal parts can be viewed and the incision of the transverse carpal wrist ligament can be done. The internal structures are viewed through a video monitor.

But surgery can be avoided if you take action now and start looking for the right carpal tunnel exercises that you can do to help your condition. Other non-surgical managements are also needed to reduce the risk of having the need for surgical release of carpal tunnel and also to avoid hand muscle atrophy. Rest and proper carpal tunnel exercises will help you regain the normal function of your hand and will get rid of your carpal tunnel pain.

A wrist splint is a very important assistive device used for carpal tunnel syndrome. Frequent rest period is also important in healing the syndrome. Flicking your hand is one way of relieving the symptom because this helps decompression on the nerve.

If you also want to exercise your hand muscles, you can hold or grip on a ball, do some gripping and releasing exercises but you must remember to do this lightly only. You can do wrist flexion, extension and movement from side to side.

There are different carpal tunnel remedies that you can choose from in order to help you get rid of your carpal tunnel pain fast. These methods will help you avoid and even totally keep the hand surgery off the options. These can be found by searching the internet and they can be done in the comfort of your homes.

That is how easy carpal tunnel syndrome treatment can be! Learning the right carpal tunnel exercises to help get rid of the pain will not only help you but also your friend or loved one who suffers from the same condition.

Carpal tunnel exercises are important in order for you to recuperate and to regain your normal hand functions. Using the wrong exercises will not only worsen the condition but may also cause you some serious and permanent damage. This is why it is very important that you follow the right carpal tunnel exercises and the right treatment regimen to get rid of the pain and discomforts caused by carpal tunnel syndrome.

The Carpal Tunnel Healing Measures

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a common neurological disorder for majority of the workers whose jobs involved prolonged repetitive hand and wrist movements. The carpal tunnel healing duration depends on which healing measures you opt to do.

Students, writers to office workers, many of these individuals experience signs and symptoms of the nerve compression on the wrist. The severity of the compression of course varies among different individuals and the choice of treatment depends on the patient’s age, medication tolerance and severity of the syndrome itself.

There is no absolute and complete carpal tunnel healing; instead there are only protective procedures that we do for the affected nerve, the median nerve. This nerve supplies the sensory and motor functions of our hand. Once this is affected certain restrictions on hand function and an uncomfortable sensation such as pain is being experienced by an individual.

Protective Carpal Tunnel Healing Measures

There are measures that we do in order to have a fast carpal tunnel healing process. This may take few weeks or few months, but the most important thing is they address the concerns for sufferers. These concerns include the pain, numbness and tingling sensation felt. Some hand function limitations may also be experienced. If the treatment being used is ineffective, atrophies and further debilitation on hand function are possible.

We all know that different individuals may present with symptoms that differ in severity but it is most important that these symptoms are addressed and treated accordingly. The root of the problem is nerve compression thus carpal tunnel healing involves primarily on the median nerve recuperating from tunnel compression.

To promote carpal tunnel healing the first step that you should take is resting your wrist. This can be achieved by using wrist splints. The splints function to limit wrist motions that can worsen the condition. Since patients in acute phase experience nocturnal wrist pain, the wrist splints are advised to be used at night though this is also worn in the daytime if daily activities trigger the pain.

The wrist movements that must be avoided are hyperflexion and hyperextension which both can irritate the inflamed nerves within the carpal tunnel. The flexor retinaculum is the ligament that makes up the carpal tunnel and the wrist splint acts as a stabilizer of the wrist.

Resting your wrist may not be only limited to wrist splints. If you have a mild syndrome, extreme motions of the wrist that can trigger the symptoms must be avoided. The symptoms that you may feel are pain, tingling sensations and numbness of the thumb, index, middle and radial half the ring fingers. In chronic cases, a carpal tunnel syndrome patient may experience thumb muscle wasting or atrophy of thenar muscles or the thumb muscles.

If you are taking carpal tunnel healing measures, complications are prevented. Treatments aim to lessen the pain, tingling sensations and numbness. They also aim to regain or preserve hand functions by maintaining the hand muscle strength, especially the grip strength that can be greatly affected by this condition.

Application of moist heat can help in decreasing the pain felt by the patient. In addition, cryotherapy or ice application do aid in decreasing the inflammation. These are measures done in physical therapy; ultrasound and TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) applications to control the pain.

Exercises, such as stretching and strengthening exercise, may be contraindicated during the acute phase but these exercises play an important role in keeping the ability of the hand to function during and after carpal tunnel healing process occur. Certain exercises are taught in the acute or sub-acute phases when the pain has already subsided to a more tolerable level.

Ergonomics is important in the healing of CTS. Adjusting your working area especially if your work requires you to do prolonged typing on a computer keyboard is important. You must position the wrist in a more comfortable manner which ensures that the compression of the median nerve on the volar aspect of the wrist is being avoided.

Endoscopic carpal tunnel release uses two kinds of techniques. The first technique is the single portal technique wherein a small incision is made on the wrist area. The second is the two-portal technique in which small incisions are made on wrist and hand. The latter may be more preferred since this causes fewer traumas to the underlying tissues during the procedure. Aside from this procedure being less invasive than the open tunnel release, the scar resulting from it is relatively small and quicker to heal. Another advantage is that at 3 months after surgery, the hand is less painful since lesser structures were affected during the surgery.

The surgery permanently cuts the carpal ligament that is why after undergoing carpal release surgery patients experience marked decrease in grip strengths. But hand functions are being preserved or regained in a remarkable manner. This is why most surgeons prefer to do the release surgery over the more conservative treatments.
